Another one from 1986!
I meant to publish this a week ago, but holidays happened and nowww,
Footprints In The Sand is live in Bandcamp! And should be live in Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, Amazon, Pandora, Deezer, Tidal AND iHeartRadio in the next day or three.
I wrote this song sitting at my dad’s piano in the summer of ‘86. The basic theme is about living spontaneously. I generally have done so, and indeed The UpTones tended to experiment freely, rather than stick to any strict formulas in our art or lives. “Footprints” has a hyped-up, Mod R&B style beat, akin to The Untouchables’ Free Yourself which is a clear influence here. This one got the kids bouncing off the walls both onstage and off, and though we tried to capture it in a recording studio once, the elusive live feeling wasn’t quite there and soon we were on to other things. I’m delighted that Paul pulled up this cassette and he and Charles mastered it for digital, for here is a take of the song which lives up to the vision I had of it at the aforementioned piano just a few months previously. I’m glad to share it today.
More from this archaeological expedition soon!
Happy Caturday and happy footprints-makin’ to all ye fine critters,
Eric Din
