Strollin' the Avenue with The UpTones in 1986
One more juicy cut from this live cassette before we release the whole skaboodle! And other assorted mews..
Good morning, Happy Caturday,
I’m pleased to share Girl On The Avenue from The UpTones’ recently digitized Rheem Theater tape. This is the full, long, live, dub version of the song, which often closed our set during this period. The studio version is on our OUTBACK EP which came out right around the time of this show.
By November of 1986, The UpTones had played a good number of shows with this lineup, touring the West Coast, and we had hit a certain stride. One of the things I loved about this group was our tendency to arrange meticulously, but also to improvise freely. We had a pretty good idea what we were about to do on any given night, but there were always surprises to keep things fresh. Actually, sometime we wouldn’t even write out set lists - we would just follow our instincts and each others’ cues through a full headlining show - a detail which kind of amazes me, in hindsight.
I’m glad to see this little time-capsule become available publicly for any and all. Full concert release to follow soon, and 4 songs from the show are already here. Oh! And Girl On The Avenue will land in the usual streaming services in about one week.
Next Mewsletters will have exciting mews about The Recyclists, the FAVES, and some other Berkeley Cat Records artistes, including meself. Truth is, I have been more busy than expected in my spare time lately, finishing a production of a fun new song, and another homespun video. Being a one-cat operation who continues to improvise within my own attempts at structured plans, I never know exactly what’ll happen next at BCR World Hindquarters! So I guess in this way I have not changed. But I try to keep up. And I’m proud of my association with the artists we are privileged to host. Y’all can look ‘em up and follow them directly too - a more reliable method than waiting for a cat! At our home site - https://www.berkeleycatrecords.com, there are links to the lot of ‘em.
Thanks for your earballs. Back to the lab I go. Oh, and this new track I’m finishing up? It is (all together now..) a.. BANGER!!!!! :D wuvoo,
Din
good song!
