Better Angels and Gardens
A despatch from the song patch
We each do what we can. Somehow I write songs when the inspiration strikes, and sometimes (thankfully not always), inspiration comes in the form of dystopian horror.
When Russia blundered murderously into Ukraine in February of 2022, I wrote and recorded this -
Given current events it seems worth sharing again.
Yet another anti-war song, yes there are many. But as Jesse Michaels once sang in Operation Ivy, “Ain’t nothin’ wrong with another unity song.” And with this I agree.
Most of us want to do the things we do and not be harassed. Run our shops, take care of our families and communities, “Plant a garden on the roof, and go out skating in the square,” as I sang in my unambiguously titled missive. Most of us are not homicidal maniacs. Generally we most of us are not fundamentalists or extremists or sociopaths of any stripe. Hopefully we can arrange a world where batshit lunatics are not in charge of armies.
Here’s an instrumental number I put together a year ago, which has nothing at all to do with war and bad things at all. For balance, don’t you know.
Here’s to the better angels of our nature and pretty much everything else Abraham Lincoln talked about.
All best,
